House and Senate Budget Conferees Named – Call to Action to Support University Funding

Possibly the most important Legislative issue this session for TACT and Texas faculty is the two-year budget being debated as we speak. The Lt. Governor and House Speaker have named their budget conferees, who will seek compromise between the adopted budgets of each chamber.

The Senate has proposed the more conservative budget bill, which includes 6-10 percent funding reductions for each university and eliminates the special item appropriations – unique programs such as the McDonald Observatory – which have grown over time. Our message should be to reinstate current funding, plus expected enrollment growth, to continue success toward 60 X 30TX, the State’s higher education strategic plan.

If you wish to contact the following conferees, please let them know if you are a constituent. House emails are and Senate emails are Phone numbers may be found at

House budget conferees are John Zerwas, Oscar Longoria, Sarah Davis, Trent Ashby and Larry Gonzales.

Senate budget conferees are Jane Nelson, Juan Hinojosa, Joan Huffman, Lois Kolkhorst, and Charles Schwertner.

TACT will continue to communicate that investment in Texas higher education is crucial to our future economic success, particularly as the younger cohort of Texans is increasingly challenged financially. Your initiative is being called upon to lend voice to our concerns.
